Matsuo Basho (1644–1694)

The flowering of irises among the Japanese is associated with the holiday of boys; on May 5, the Japanese decorate their homes with flowers and leaves of irises. Iris symbolizes success, health, belligerence and courage; magical properties are attributed to this flower in Japan. In Japanese, "iris" and "warrior spirit" are denoted by the same character.
