This Tsuishitsu brooch was made using the carving technique, in which a lacquer board (approximately 7 mm thick) that has been coated with around 100 layers of colored lacquer is carved with a knife to reveal the layers underneath. In addition to lacquer, luminous shell, pearl, iridescent shell, gold plate, gold balls, and gold powder are used. Tsuishitsu is a board made entirely of lacquer, with colored lacquer applied about 100 times at a rate of once every three days.
