The theme ‘Up and Down’ refers to both geographic aspects - the Danes live up north and the South Africans live down south, and everyday aspects - the usual ups and downs of life. The works depict cultural and geographic differences and similarities, as well as a diversity of materials and techniques. Plus the challenges, joys and milestones we all experience in our private and professional lives.

This project brings makers from two very different cultures together, and the result is a wide and varied array of objects, all rooted in jewellery making and with both personal and universal narratives. ‘Up and Down’ was conceived in February 2020 so the gestation period has been unusually long. Curator, Helen Clara Hemsley "I believe that the concept and message of this project is even more relevant, because of the years of Corona that have affected us all. There is an even greater desire to unite across the vast kilometres and celebrate unity, creativity and diversity."

The South African part of the project will be held at Tinsel Gallery, Johannesburg: 11 August to 1 September 2022.
